There are a few UK words that I prefer to those I am used to in the US. Like 'lift' for elevator. No idea why we use such an unwieldy word nor why we keep it.

But some word usages I don't understand at all. Like 'leftenant'. Why? I realize that pronouncing it 'lootenant' is also not the French pronunciation but it is at least closer.
