The town was named for a thermos bottle because of what they call the thermos bottle miracle. As one docent explained it to me:

"You put something hot in a thermos bottle, and the bottle keeps it hot."

"Yes, that's for sure," I agreed.

"But if you put something cold in a thermos bottle, the thermos bottle keeps it COLD!", she continued, wide-eyed.

"Yes, yes. But what is your point?"

"Well,: she said proudly, "How does it know???"
