Not long after the Berlin wall came tumbling down I did a gig in Leipzig. It was a bit like "Auf wiedersehen,pet" with gangs of Irish brickies all over the place. One of these Paddies, pissed out of his head, swayed up to me and said,"Shing the Wild Rover!" I'd actually just sung it, but a Sussex version rather then THAT one. If only to get his dreadfully alcoholic breath out of my face I sang it, not only that, I sang it straight!(I have been known to do THAT version of it as "The Wild Rover Rap" with tambourine backing!)
