Subject: RE: Union Grove Fiddlers Convention 1969-1973
I visited in Aug. 2014 which was the first time I'd been back since my last Easter Weekend trip in 1978. I was there, from Virginia, in '75, '76, '77 and '78 with both high school friends and then college ones. I cannot believe we survived. I cannot believe we were there as teenagers. Luckily, our parents never heard the stories of those 3 day weekends. The property is still beautiful--that North Carolina rolling hills. But then, in Aug.'14, unlike the 140,000 people who camped there in the late 70s for the convention, it was bare--just green grass and quiet. I loved seeing the arena and having the memories of great music, great dancin' and a lot of messed up but very friendly folks flood back. I drove to the local store and talked with some guys about those old days--even apologized for being one of those wild teenage hippies that came through back then. We didn't hurt anything while there and it instilled in me a lifelong love of bluegrass music. I've got photos stored in albums someplace in my house--going to look for them now and settle in with a glass of wine to relive the memories again!
