Cleaning up grammar in folk songs seems to be saying, "Here's a song I really like but it's clear from the grammer that the maker(s) of the song lacked my superior education, keen language sensibilities and obvious cultural advantages." "I'd better correct the grammer because it's such a great song everyone will naturally think I wrote it and I don't want them to think I'm stupid."At least that's the way it sounds to me.
I figure if you're going to change the words, the changes ought to be made up on the fly because you're too drunk to remember the real ones. That's the folk tradition. <g>
