What a brave and difficult, yet rewarding, thing to do. It can wrench his world around. Writing his story may be exactly the best way to do it. Be sure he also knows your story, and how precious he was to you and how afraid you were that you might not get to keep him because of your cancer, how hard you fought to do that right and well. And beautifully.

Rum, my son was in the NICU for 2 weeks, born full term (38-weeks) but with premature lungs. I expressed milk that they gave via stomach tube until they let him out of the isolet so I could finally handle him and nurse properly. For two weeks any time people touched him it was painful, and they'd had him sedated so he wouldn't fight the equipment. Nursing was something that we both enjoyed very much, finally getting the contact. It took a couple of weeks after we brought him home that he didn't scream bloody murder at being handled for small things like changing diapers.
