Thread Name: The Mansfield Manuscript
Subject: RE: The Mansfield Manuscript
Highly recommended and all done at cost. This is one that Child never saw. It went missing until after he died. Whilst the ballads and songs are very interesting they are a fascinating window into upper class social mores in 18thc Scotland. The ms was compiled between 1763 and 1786 by Elizabeth St Clair of Edinburgh. She would have been about 25 when she started it. Ronnie has done a great job of researching the family history and identifying the more obscure songs. A few of the ballads did actually reach Child by a roundabout route as C K Sharpe and Chambers had both taken material from it in the early 19thc.
