The ringing of hands is an honorable and ancient tradition dating back to the Mayans during the Mongol invasions. Typical a selected set of enemy hands, removed from the enemies, would be dried in solar ovens and mounted in order of size. Ringing was done with fire-hardened mahogony sticks. The melodies used were typically modal and minor scale, designed to strike terror into the hearts of the enemies who still had their hands.
