It does sound like a concertina, DtG. I've wondered about whether cowboys used them as one of my buddies accompanies me on English while I sing a few cowboy songs (Hills of Mexico, (I Ride an) Old Paint, The Old Chisholm Trail) and it works great, at least I think so, and lends some warmth to those tunes. We call it the Prairie Piano or the Stomach Steinway.
