Subject: RE: I've got the foremans job at last
That's the same thing I get, Jon. There's a setting on RealEncoder that's not immediately understandable, "selective recording," that must be checked in order for people to be able to save a recording on their computer. Apparently, Max didn't have that box checked, so all you can download is a link to the online recording. I got that confused myself last week and e-mailed a RealAudio recording to somebody, and they couldn't save it. Now we know.
RealEncoder is free, and it's a great way to e-mail recordings to people. If you record a WAV, the file size is humongous. RealAudio recordings are about 10% of the size of a WAV, and the sound quality is pretty darn good.
Now, Gene has been using something called "layer-3.wav" files, or something like that - maybe those are the mp3 files people have spoken of. The sound quality of those is excellent, and the file size is reasonable. I haven't found a recorder for those that I like as much as RealEncoder, though - mostly because I haven't taken the time to find one, I think.
Gene is going to flash me an e-mail two minutes from now and tell me that if I just downloaded this or that and the other thing, I'd be able to post recordings of myself singing in bifurcated quadraphonic sound....but I'm not sure the world is ready for that. [chuckle....]
