Wilson was always castigated for 'galloping pragmatism'. although much of what he did seems hopelessly idealistic - refusing to back America over Vietnam, creating the Open University, engaging with Sinn Fein in the Cheyne House talks - trying to defuse the Troubles before they really kicked off.
