Thread Name: Gramma over the Wall
Subject: Gramma over the Wall
I've heard about a song brought over from Britain and adapted in America which concerns a man who was a wizard in the original song. The Old World version says, "He threw his grammarie [i.e., magical power] over the wall." The New World singers, dropping out the supernatural elements and not being familiar with that use of "grammarie," sang it as "He threw his gramma over the wall." Really! I have heard this mentioned several times on folk music panels at SF conventions. But I never got around to writing down the name of the song. I can't find it in the database under keyword "gramma" or "grandma." Does anybody know this one?
