Jean gave us a window of insight into the culture of Appalachia and her music from the Cumberlands. She was an intelligent and knowledgeable scholar of folklore in addition to her lovely performances. She brought the dulcimer into prominence in the public eye and furthered the interest in its accompaniment to the old ballads and story-songs as well as her introduction of play-party songs to the folk community.
