WHISKEY JOHNNY.

(Topsail Halliard)

Oh whiskey is the life of man,
(Chorus) Whiskey, Johnny,
Oh whiskey is the life of man,
(Chorus) Whiskey for my Johnny.

[Similarly:]

Whiskey here and whiskey there....

It's whiskey almost everywhere....

Whiskey made me pawn my clothes....

Whiskey got me a broken nose....

Whiskey killed my sister Sue....

It's killin' me and killin' you....

I'll drink whiskey when I can....

I'll drink it from an old tin can....

I thought I heard the old man say....

He'll give us whiskey this very day....

My note: Chanteys for long hoists (like this and "Ranzo" and "Blow the Man Down") may have come closer to being standardized because they had to kept going for a long while. It would have been equally true for capstan songs.
