I first came across the term 30 years ago with sense of one of the meanings given on Wikipedia :

Hack (computer science), an inelegant but effective solution to a computing problem

and would still use it that way talking to other ex-programmers of my generation. I think that is the sense that leads, via a small shift in meaning, to Life Hack

Tip still seems like a could word for a tip though.
