I once wrote to one of the better dictionary companies (Websters(?)) regarding a term I heard used by a trapper in northern Alberta. The dictionary people informed me that they did not put a word into their dictionary until it had appeared in print, presumably in recognized newspapers, magazines or books. So the term could have been in common street usage quite some time before it appeared in the OED.
