I agree that if there was NOT a festival ,there would not be a fringe , but the fringe gives more opportunity for ALL performers to perform - There are a LOT of folkies who want do more for a week than watch only other performers .
And as HAS been mentioned above , the town (Pubs , Cafes , B&B's etc) do make a lot of money from Folk Week .
