I'm looking online at tenor ukuleles but the question could apply to guitars and mandolins. I'm not used to using pickups but is it a worthwhile option to have? The ukulele is a relatively quiet instrument and I read that you can connect pickups to computer to record, which would be nice.

Are there any reasons NOT to go for this option. For instance not worth the expense because external pickup is better? Or can it have any adverse relation to the tone of the unamplified instrument? Or does the pickup greatly increase the need to protect the instrument from damp or dust (I sometimes go camping with an instrument in tow)?
