Thread Name: BS: Emigrants to USA
Subject: Emigrants to USA
I realise this is not directly related to folk music but you Mudcatters are so knowledgeable I am sure there is someone out there who can help me with this social history.

I know that several hundred thousand East European/Baltic emigrants came through Riverside Quay Station in Hull at the turn of the century to be carried by trains to Liverpool on their way to the USA. One of Ken Hoole's books (Reg Hist of GB Vol 4) gives a figure of 61,278 for 1903 which was the peak year. I also recall reading somewhere the total figure was about 2 million but can't recall the source. Does anyone have any figures for this traffic or know of a web-site with further info on quantative numbers for these refugees bound for the USA.
