Actually, Snuffy, the SCA does a little more than stroll around in period dress. At least they did back in the '80's when I was involved. They research the time, reproducing the food, weapons, clothes and armor, beverages, manners and morals (!) of the time. They like to reproduce the good bits (gentility and fun) and leave out the bad bits (senseless violence and dirt).Filk, which is largely parody, also includes some very nice original songs based on science fiction themes. At least it did back in the old days when I was involved.
Come along Harry and Mary and Joe,
Pack up some lunches and everyone go,
Fill up the camper drive down to White Sands,
And pop the champaigne while the space shuttle lands.
There seems to be a consistency in the first two paragraphs of my post. The phrase "used to be involved" crops up with distressing regularity in my life. Maybe it's time to re-evaluate my lifestyle. But that will have to wait for later. I have a contra dance to prepare for.
