Thread Name: BS: What do you call your bread?
Subject: RE: BS: What do you call your bread?
hmmmmm... I'm late to the thread as usual.

We all know that bread comes in VERY many styles and shapes and consistancies in the world...but the interesting thing about this thread to me is just how fond the English, in particular, seem to be of finding quaint, folksy, colloquial, regional NAMES for things....some of which seem to have little or no relationship to the item. Bloomers, baps, balm cakes, darls, doshes and barmbacks simply don't register in my brain! *grin*

It is almost as if various regions and classes were using language as a way to identify themselves to each other, the way various regions in the USA do. Any feelings on this?

and I never WILL be able to identify a major meal as 'tea'.(People here argue constantly about when one eats 'lunch', 'dinner', 'supper'...etc., and often have their egos and identities involved, just as they do about how to pronounce 'tomato' and 'salmon'.
