Roy was a super bloke. i first saw him about forty five years back at andy Dwyer's club at the prince of wales in Tamworth. The first of many superb evenings being entertained by a great folksinger.

later i knew him as an actor on the set of various tv programmes when Nottingham and Leeds had big tv studios. he was sensible , thoughtful and he had thought out his ideas about folk music very carefully.

i remember one time running him home from location - he was living in Sandiacre at the time, and he seemed pretty tired. he was lamenting the few venues that there were booking him...all i can say is to those clubs...you missed out on a good 'un!

he could really get to the heart of a traditional song. you got an insight into how a hunting song or a shanty would enthuse a company. he could deliver a ballad with the commitment of a Shakespearian actor performing a soliloquy.

he was a great man.
