BLACK HISTORY MONTH FACTS OF THE DAY - FEBRUARY 14

FEBRUARY 14, 1946 - Tap dancer, actor, singer, and choreographer Gregory Hines is born. Hines began dancing as a child and went on to launch a successful Broadway, television and film career. His notable movies include The Cotton Club and White Nights. Hines died of cancer in Los Angeles August 9, 2003 at the age of 57.

FEBRUARY 14, 1936 - The National Negro Congress is organized at a Chicago meeting attended by 817 delegates representing more than 500 organizations. Asa Phillip Randolph of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters was elected president of the new organization.

FEBRUARY 14, 1867 - Morehouse College, the only all male historically black institution of higher learning in the United States, is organized in Augusta, Georgia. The institution was later moved to Atlanta.
A new registration law in Tennessee abolishes racial distinctions in voting.

FEBRUARY 14, 1817 - Frederick Douglass, abolitionist, author and orator is born. Born into slavery as Frederick Baile, Douglass purchased his freedom in 1845 and went on to become the greatest abolitionist of his time.

FEBRUARY 14, 1760 - African American bishop Richard Allen is born into slavery in Philadelphia. Allen bought his freedom at age 17 and went on to found the first national black church in the United States, the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church, in 1816.
