SEASONS

(Eric Bogle)

When I was young and in my prime I thumbed my nose at Old Man time
For I'd rivers to cross and hills to climb and dreams to pursue
Those years when time was my friend, I though they's never end
How happy I was then in Springtime of my life

But free and easy days of youth are over far too soon
And budding leaves on stripping trees must turn to Summer's bloom

And when the Summer sunshine beamed, my star of youth still brightly gleamed
For I still hoped and I still dreamed, still chased my wandering star
But in life's masquerade, my hopes did slowly fade
And my dreams they were betrayed in the Summer of my life

For after Summer's promise comes Autumn's sweet decay
After blooming leaves on Summer trees die and blow away

And now my time is nearly done, my sands of time have nearly run
Now at last it's finally come, the Winter of my life
But for all the tears and pain, the hopes and dreams in vain
I'd live them all again, the seasons of my life

For Man's life is but Seasons, and mine have nearly passed
I've seen my Autumn, Summer, Spring, now Winter's here at last

Every songwriter worth his salt as a bash at comparing Man's life with the Seasons. This is my bash. Written Oct. 1972. Eric.
