Thatcher closed down manufacturing in this country because the unions got a bit iffy with her, and she then put the economy in the hands of speculators and yuppies. We now have to buy our coal and gas from dodgy and unreliable sources, yet her supporters will burble on about how the EU undermines our sovereignty, etc. She did more to do that by making us dependent on energy imports than any Brussels bureaucrat could ever have done. She imposed a ludicrous regime on teachers after they got uppity in the mid-80s. Thatcher took revenge on her opponents. She turned the country into a place In which loadsamoney spivs could have a field day. She deregulated financial institutions so that they could rip us all off when the going was good and make us bale out the bastards out when things, inevitably, went pear-shaped. Yes, no thanks to Blair and Brown for not putting the brakes on, before you say anything, but it was Maggie and Nigella's dad wot started it. Shame really, cos Nigella's my bloody favourite, but hey.
