In Ireland we have had a series of 'tribunals' - equivalent to that Royal Commission investigation. They started in the 1990s with an interminable investigation into the dealings in Irish beef by Larry Goodman, went on through the Moriarty tribunal investigating allegations of bribery in relation to the allocation of the first mobile phone licence; more on institutional child abuse and Magdalen Laundries and I think symphisiotomies… and on and on.
I don't see the point of these. We all wave our hands around and wail as the tribunals reveal horrors - but because they're sworn tribunals and people give evidence in them on condition it can't be used in any later Garda investigation, no matter what is revealed, no one faces any sanctions other than public exposure, which is soon forgotten.
Virtually all of the people who have been exposed as giving or taking bribes, ruining the country's reputation, harming children, running moneymaking adoption scams and slave labour, etc, etc are still walking around free as a bird and with their reputation magically restored by the forgetfulness of time.
