Mrs Steve and I were total aliens to coffee until a trip to Venice in 2010. We would never touch instant (still won't), which is devil's vomit, or even that disgusting powdered muck in a vacuum brick that you put into a pretentious piece of nonsense known as a "cafetiere". What happened is that we stopped at a cafe in Burano for a cup of tea. Joke. Small cup of tepid water with a Lipton's tea bag. We stopped a few minutes later at another joint and ordered a cappuccino. Didn't even know what one was. Suffice to say we had a few more of those on our trip and never looked back. I still understand only cappuccinos and espressos. Don't have a clue as to what these bloody macchiatos, flat whites and Americanos are. With my bean to cup machine I can take thought and have a bloody good double espresso in front of me in sixty seconds. No sugar, thanks.

By the way, been through some magnificent beans from Whittards, but for bog-standard damn good beans try Waitrose Italian-style. Always beans, never that powdered shite.
