Go to agree with Steve Shaw on this one.
The traditional bun is the only way to go and this is one of the few times when an excess of real butter is totally justified.

Make as many variants as you like but don't call them Hot Cross Buns.And as for the bacon - put that in between two slices of white bread and enjoy it properly.
