My Software Manager (for Linux Mint 17.3) offers LMMS version 1.0.0 and separately offers 'fluid soundfont-gs'. Both free and both safe to download. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu. Different operating systems may offer different software.

I've not used either so I can't say what they are like.
