The theme of this thread on Barnacle Bill seems to be "lyrics that are suitable for children". But "children's version" could also refer to the lyrics that children actually learn. In my own case, that was a version with bawdy/vulgar lyrics. In particular, in the version I learned as a child he was "Barnacle Bill the Bastard".
