Fowerth West; 4th West, refers to a 'District' - a working area in a colliery usually synonymous with a specific coal face, but also including all the associated services with that coal face, e.g. roadways, haulage, ventilation, etc. which would be extended as the coal face itself advanced into the unworked area.

Districts would be established in any workable coal seam (of which there might be several at different levels in the same colliery).
