The reason the forest fire in Alberta was such big news is because it threatened a city and its inhabitants - otherwise, it would have been just an enormous, long-overdue fire which would have been left to burn away. Forest fires are ugly and scary, but they are necessary, ironically, for the overall health of the forest - or the pertinent ecosystems, to put it another way.
