Thread Name: Lyr Req: The Bag I'm In
Subject: Lyr Add: THAT'S THE BAG I'M IN (Fred Neil)
Here they are:

THAT'S THE BAG I'M IN
(Fred Neil)

I burnt my fingers on the coffee pot;
Toast was cold and the orange juice was hot.
I should start over but, you know, I'd rather not;
Same thing gonna happen again,
'Cause that's the bag I'm in.

You know, last night as I was trippin' down the street,
Whistlin' the blues to the tappin' of my feet,
Some jive crank called the cops on the beat.
It'll happen every single time,
Every mornin' when I get up...

I miss my connections and I'm late for work again;
Y'know they'll probably drop the atom bomb the day my ship comes in.
I just can't cop a nickle, 'cause I get paid in yen. Somehow you just can't win,
'Cause that's the bag you're in.

Juke box playin' the same old melody,
Keeps on bringin' back those blue memories;
You know this evil feelin's gotta be the death of me.
I think I'm goin' out of my mind,
Every mornin' when I get up...

(Repeat first verse)

...'Cause that's the kind of bag I'm in;
I'll never get out of these crazy blues alive,
'Cause that's the bag I'm in...

I'm not absolutely certain about the "nickle" line; he slurs the first few words, until the word "cop" -- but that's what it sounds like after playing it several times.

Art, this is the first CD issue of Neil's, a conglomeration of most of the cuts on "Fred Neil," "Sessions" and "Other Side of This Life," along with the single he cut for Capitol with the Nashville Street Singers and previously unreleased cuts of "Sweet Mama," "Trouble in Mind," "December's Dream," "Ride Stormy Weather," "How Long Blues/Drown in Tears," and "The Other Side of This Life." It's a great CD. But I'm with you -- I'd like to see "Bleeker and McDougal" out again, as well as my favorite (listed above). But, hey, maybe if more Neil fans buy this one, he'll do more reissuing...
