For an interesting little bit of history and philanthropy, look up the Johnstown Flood, caused by the failure of a defective dam owned by the Carnegies and Mellons and others of their social status. Engineers had advised them for years to fix the dam, and they declined. Finally, it broke and a whole town was swept away, a couple of thousand people died. There was no such thing as civil or criminal action against millionaires in those days, but you might notice that Carnegie Hall, Carnegie-Mellon University, and the libraries and museums were built over the next few years.
