I can't supply any other verses, but the story is quite odd. Apparently Lieutenant Kije was an 'invented person' who rose through the ranks in spite of not even existing. After hearing of his exploits, some Emperor or other (Paul the something) asked to meet this famous Hussar and had to be told it was all a hum! A satire on bureaucracy apparently.
