One of my organic gardening books says that a good way to see if a compost pile is heating up is to just plunge your arm into it and wiggle your hand around a bit. I tried it once and determined that the guy who wrote that book did not live in fire ant country. A mere alligator bite would have been much less painful than a hundred fire ant stings.

And no, we don't use pythons to squeeze California oranges. We only use California oranges for target practice. We use pythons to squeeze the necks of tourists who throw their McDonald's wrappers on the roadside.
