Speaking as a nurse, codeine can be addictive, and it gives you constipation.

Lot's of seemingly innocent drugs can have bad effects. Once knew of a woman who died after taking kaolin and morphine (used to treat diarrhoea... and freely available over the counter in pharmacies... well it used to be anyway). She drank 14 bottle of the stuff a day to get the morhine....... and it killed her.
