If you play the song in C, an easy way is to play the standard C - C6 - Cmaj7 progression. You can fake this by playing C - Am - C (lift off your index finger and play C with the 2nd string open)

"Gee (C) but it's great(C6) after staying(Cmaj7) out late(Am)
Walking(Cmaj7) my baby(Am) back home(C)"...etc.
