From Chambers:

"git (slang) n: a person, used contemptuosly :a fool: a bastard - See also get. [get, offspring, brat]."

I tend to use the word in "you miserable old git" and I would imagine that in my noramal usage (tongue-in-cheek), it would be roughly like calling someone a curmudgeon (?sp).
