This is how I learned it as a kid about 50 years ago

Once I had a kitty,
A pretty little kitty cat,
Dressed him up with boots,
And a great big cowboy hat,

Sent him out a walkin',
On a summers's day,
I hope old Farmer Brown's old dog,
Don't chase my cat away

Has anybody seen my kitty,
Has anybody seen my cat,
He's got a lump on the end of his tail,
That shows that he's been fighting,

Up on Finnegan's alley,
Down on Finnegan's flat,
Has anybody seen my kitty,
