I have always seen the song as a global "Mankind" reference, not pointing at gender, but I understand how, in a modern world that is becoming more and more aware of intolerance, some evolution may be needed. Again, to paraphrase Pete, "It's folk music." Folk music is an organically changing, inclusive medium. The words will come!
