I believe they recorded three different versions, the first being in 1964 (Ross's first Youtube link above), when they were a duo, the second being the more joyful, raucous-sounding 1978 version and the "darker" version on the 1999 album 'Too Much Fun'. I like to think hindsight and bitter experience had a part to play in including the darker side of drug use in the later version.
