Our 18 or 19YO yellow tabby disappeared for 2 days. On the third morning she was back in her house, and spent more time than usual with us. The next morning she was gone, never to return. We believe that day was her farewell to us, and that she had found a place to enter the next of her lives.. I believe that, and my wife is sure that that is true. She let us remember as she was, living, sparing us having to ourselves euthanize her.
