Modern day splints don't even make good firewood. Back in the days when splints were made of wood, you healed up, took the splint off, and used it to cook a batch of biscuits in the wood-burning stove. Try that nowadays, and all you get is a bunch of poisonous fumes, a hefty fine for air pollution, and biscuits that taste of a cocktail of burnt polymers.

Same deal with crutches. Toss a pair of aluminum crutches in the fireplace and see how much warmer the room gets.
