I wouldn't say that I can 'read' music but I occasionally use Finale Notepad* to reproduce a tune by sliding notes around till I find the right one. Or use the keyboard to enter the actual notes. You can also use the keyboard to specify intervals of chords.
Files save as .mid or .mus and export to MusicXML which can then be changed into text & abcnotation for sharing
