Too many commas and too few commas are equally bad. My impression is that the latter fault is probably more common.

Sometimes it's a matter of a shade of meaning or emphasis. For example, in Steve's example, I'd have been for putting in the commas framing "obsessively", as a way of reinforcing the criticism of the editor.
