It was just a case of supplanted terminology. It happens all the time. But no reason to confuse them.

Larboard was the "load side"--typically the side of a ship used for loading cargo in earlier times.

The term--the opposite of starboard--was gradually replaced with "port" to designate the left side of a vessel as seen facing for'ard.
