My family has spent the last century or so, denying, minimizing, and squashing out of sight its hereditary alcoholism. Now there are fewer relatives, in present generations, with chemical dependency; but the mental fragility and instability is the new elephant in the room. Break the silence, and everybody freezes.
It's rough enough just to live with needing help and care; but to pile the denial on top of it! How long o Lord!
