So all you are saying is when you go to a Folk Club you expect to hear Folk Music. No problem with that in principle. In my experience it has not a lot to do with the real world where the songs were sung before the revival got hold of them. I can't get that worked up about what people sing in Folk Clubs. I am quite happy to hear a song by KT Tunstall at Skipton Folk club on Monday last and get up and sing 'The Foggy Dew' after it. Nobody else seemed bothered either and they enjoyed both equally. Trish Nolan sings plenty of modern songs plus her uncles 'Well below the Valley' and the rest of his repertoire (I think). I just don't have a problem with it, and I am having a great time everywhere I go. The word Folk means one thing to academics and another to the general public. Who cares? That does not somehow mean I am insincere or demeaning the song tradition, it means that I have total faith in the survival of any tradition be it song or craft in a changing world.
