One lesson from 1984 was that leaders weak at home can compensate by bigging up "enemies" overseas. Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon had Vietnam. Reagan had Iran and Central America. Thatcher had the Falklands. Blair and Bush had their bogus war on terror. Western foreign policy, eh?
